How do I avoid inhaling the cigar smoke?
When puffing on a cigar, the smoke should be held in the mouth only and, occasionally, can be moved up toward the nose. Cigarette smokers can have difficulty ridding themselves of the reflex to inhale. Beginners may sometimes inhale the smoke unintentionally. Here is a small tip that we find helpful: just before drawing on the cigar, inhale briefly, just enough so that the lungs are already somewhat full. This will help suppress the immediate need to inhale. For obvious health reasons it is important to refrain from inhaling cigar smoke.
Cigar smokers refer to it as a puff when the smoke is brought only as far as the palate. There you can move it around, like a sip of wine, and savour it without swallowing. Normally one exhales via the mouth, or occasionally through the nose. Breathing out through the nose can be a little tricky and care should be taken to send the smoke directly from the mouth into the nose without inhaling it beforehand. The mucous membranes in your nose absorb more nicotine and other pollutants into your system than when exhaling through the mouth, which is why it is not recommendable to regularly exhale cigar smoke through the nose. Inhaling the smoke can often cause nausea, especially in those unused to smoking, and it does not taste very good.
